Wupperthal Western Cape Cape West Coast

Wupperthal Western Cape Cape West Coast Information

One can take the R364 to Calvinia which leads one through the Pakhuis (‘warehouse’) Pass. Here one can see the most unusual rock formations on either side of the pass and this distinguishes the Cedarberg from other mountain passes. Roughly 18 km past the summit, the road turns south to Wupperthal and Biedouw. About 15 km along this road one reaches the turnoff to the Biedouw valley which is famous for its wildflowers from July to September. One then proceeds down the winding Rondeberg (‘round mountain’) Pass to Wupperthal.

Wupperthal was the first Rhenish mission farm in South Africa and was founded in January 1830 by J. G. Leipoldt and Baron Theobald von Wurmb. They bought the farm Rietmond on the banks of the Tra-Tra (‘bushy’) River.

The missionaries taught the crafts of bricklaying, joinery, thatching, millinery, shoemaking and tanning. The making of ‘velskoene’ is still practiced at Wupperthal and is well known throughout South Africa. The factory was started by a German shoemaker, Christian Häfele who came out to assist Leipoldt in his mission work. Farming activities today include the cultivation of rooibos tea, tobacco, various fruits, especially figs, quinces, pomegranates and peaches, and goat farming.

The centre-piece of the village is the gabled thatched church built in 1834. There is also three terraces of gabled whitewashed thatched cottages built in the Greek style and each has its own garden. Open furrows in the narrow lanes carry the water for irrigation.
