Malmesbury Western Cape Cape West Coast Information

Malmesbury is the largest town in the Swartland and about 65km north of Cape Town. It is especially known for its grain and wine cultivation as well as sheep and poultry farming. The town originally developed around a tepid sulphur spring and the first farms were allocated in 1703. The area was known as "Het Zwartland" (Black Land) apparently because of the typical rhinoceros bush, which has a black appearance during a certain time of the year.

When the fifth Dutch Reformed congregation in the Cape was established here, it became known as Zwartlands-kerk but was renamed Malmesbury in 1829 by the Cape governor Sir Lowry Cole in honour of his father-in-law Sir James Harris, First Earl of Malmesbury. The town acquired municipal status in 1860.

One of Malmesbury’s biggest assets is its central position in the Boland. The town is situated in the heart of the grain-fields and in the centre of the winelands. The west coast is only a stone’s throw away - it takes about 30 minutes to reach Melkbosstrand, Yzerfontein, Ganzekraal and a hour to reach Langebaan.

The Diep River that flows through the town, adds to the tranquil atmosphere. In the winter the green grain fields stretch as far as the eye can see. In summer the landscape is characterised by the golden ripe grain fields and green vineyards. Bokomo, the country’s best known grain co-operative, has its head office here.
