The heart of the West Coast is the region between Yzerfontein and Lambertsbaai, but as a whole it stretches along the western part of South Africa, reaching from Cape Town to to the mouth of the Orange River at the southwestern border of Namibia. Its primary trade resides in agriculture, yet industry also plays a vital role at Saldanha Bay and Malmesbury.

The Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve stretches from the Diep River to the Berg River. It covers approximately 378 000 hectares of coastal lowlands and marine environment. It encapsulates a region with beautiful landscapes, a considerable abundance of fauna and flora and unique cultures. It is one of the few in the world that was not driven by a state initiative, but rather by the local communities living within the region.

Many places of interest boasting unique features can be found in the West Coast. There is a Proclaimed Ramsar Site of international conservation importance and the Langebaan Lagoon, which includes the most important wetlands in South Africa. There is a World Heritage Site forming part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom. It has the world’s largest fossil oyster bed and the greatest diversity of fossils in the world.

The West Coast is a place of golden wheat fields, peaceful surroundings, culturally rich fishing communities and a rest for the soul.
