Betty's Bay Western Cape Cape Overberg Information

A drive from from Cape Town to Hermanus along the scenic Clarence Drive Route (R44) will take one past the picturesque seaside village of Betty's Bay. Considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, this area was the first UNESCO declared Biosphere in South Africa and as such is fiercely protected by the town’s occupants.

The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens is the attraction that Betty's Bay is best known for. This lush botanical garden stretches from the sea to the top of the mountain, and is referred to by many as "little Kirstenbosch". This is one of only a few places where visitors can view a collection of local fynbos that includes proteas, restios and over 50 species of ericas. The area is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and although the smallest of the world’s six plant kingdoms, it nevertheless has the 2nd largest diversity.
