"THE" Whale Nursery of South Africa

If your are looking for a village that offers nature's best, and you are happy to create your own entertainment, then Witsand/Port Beaufort is a MUST VISIT.  Witsand is the perfect halfway stop between Cape Town and Knysna, and can be reached on a tarred road from the N Heidelberg on R322 (37km), a gravel road R324 from malagas, and also fromVermaaklikheid. It is also very central - 5 different day trips can be enjoyed.

Witsand is officially known as "THE" Whale Nursery of SA due to the largest concentration of Southern Right whales that visit San Sebastian Bay every year between July and November to mate and calve.  During the 1998 season 18 calves were born; 2006 - 69 calves were born; 2008 - 62 cow calf pairs were counted and a total of 165 whales in the Bay on one day.  This is awesome land based viewing for visitors that do not like to see boats amongst the whales.  Witsand is a bird watchers paradise with more than 162 species in different habitats, in the area.  South Africa's national bird, the Blue Brane is in abundance, and the endangered Oystercatcher is also found here.

Port Beauford is situated on the river and was developed by the Barry family, and Wistand is mainly on the sea side of the village which is only 3km in length.

Witsand offers excellent estuarine fishing and rock angling with catches of Cob, Steenbras, Grunter and Elf.  "Tag and release" is encouraged, and conservation is practised seriously.

Ther are 3 restaurants, 2 shops and quality accommodation on offer to tourists in Witsand.
