Ladismith Western Cape Cape Garden Route & Klein Karoo Information

Jewel of the Little Karoo

Situated on Route 62 at the foot of the Klein Swartberg, this town was named after the beautiful Spanish-born wife of Cape Governor of the time, Sir Harry Smith. The town is also the birthplace of CJ Langenhoven, one of South Africa’s foremost writers & poets. The district is known for its agriculture & farming, producing fine wines, fruit and cheese, as well as the Ladismith style architecture.

A landmark in the town is Towerkop (2 189m) with its split peak. According to legend, an angry witch flew overhead and struck the mountain with her wand, causing the split and giving it the name ‘bewitched peak’.

Visit Hoeko Valley (13km from town) - one of the largest apricot-producing areas in South Africa or drive on to Seweweekspoort - a natural wonder of the Cape Ripple Mountains. The Ladismith Co-op winery (Tel: 028 551 1042) is best known for its superb white wines, while the Ladismith- (Tel: 028 551 1613) and Parmalat Cheese Factories (Tel: 028 551 1030) produces excellent cheese.

Go hiking on the Elandsberg- or Towersig Hiking Trails, horse riding in the Anysberg Nature Reserve, 4x4, abseiling and mountain biking at Buffelspoort. Accommodation varies from hotels & farmhouses to guest houses & bed-and-breakfasts.

Van Wyksdorp is situated approximately 45km off the R62 in a south-easterly direction towards Calitzdorp. It is a peaceful town where donkey carts are still a common sight.

Activities in the area include mountaineering, with options including the Seweweekspoort Peak (2 325 m) and the Elandsberg and Towersig Hiking Trails offering breathtaking views of the valley and hills. Bird watching and game viewing is also available. The Seweweekspoort is one of the gateways to the Great Karoo, with its magnificent rock formations, horseriding, 4x4 routes, abseiling, rock climbing or mountain biking on offer.

Annual events include the Eco Festival in May and Seweweekspoort Mountain Bike Challenge in October. Visitors are welcome to explore the Hoeko Valley one of the largest apricot-producing areas. Other towns in the area include Vanwyksdorp, a peaceful town where donkey carts are still a common sight and Amalienstein/Zoar, former Berlin mission stations east of Ladismith.
