The City of George is the heart of the Southern Cape and the main business centre. With sophisticated road, air and rail links to all major centra it is a conveniet base from which to explore the charms and attractions of the Garden Route and Klein karoo.

Spectacularly locted on a picturesque coastal plateau between the Outenique Mountains and the Indian Ocean, the mild climate invites year round outdoor living.

Experience Agri-Tourism first hand on the Outeniqua Country Hop Route – a scenic route including Herold’s Bay in the south and the Herold Wine Distirict in the north – and pick your own strawberries, sample authentic Dutch cheese and taste wine.

What to See And Do - Housed in the Old Drostdy (built 1811) the George Museum’s main theme is the timber industry. Displays include an important collection of old tools, a reconstructed woodcutter’s cottage and a selection of labeled indigenous trees. Do not mis the fairy paintings by local artist Ruby Reeves and the collection of mechanical musical instruments and massive old printing presses. George’s historic churches include St Peter and St Paul – the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country’ the Dutch Reformed Moederkerk (consecrated 1842) and St Mark’s Cathedral.

George also boasts the Audrey Moriarty Environmental Centre housing a prestigious botanical collection right next to the Garden Route Botanical Garden and holds a Wild Flower Show during October.

Events and festivals are held year-round and include the second biggest motor show in South Africa, the George Old Motor Show and the Outeniqua Whell Chair Challenge, both held annually in February.

The town of George is one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations offering around 10 courses, driving ranges and a world class golf academy, including the renown golf course at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate. Several new golfing estates are in the planning or building stages in this unspoilt and scenic enviroment. There are many short golf courses in the George erea. They differ fro golf courses in 3 main ways: they are smaller and less intimidating – the everage distance is about 130m, they are pay and play no bookings is necessary and there is no dress code!

The Outeniqua Transport Museum is the only one of its kind in South Africa. It houses a replica of an old station, displays of locomotives, coaches, motor vehicles and animal-drawn transport, a curio shop and restaurants. The Transport Museum is also departure point for the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe which offers scheduled steamtrain journeys between George and mossel Bay.

Many fine walks and trails have been laid out in the area (contact the Outeniqua Nature Reserve). Follow the mountain passes by car or mountain bike for breathtaking scenery and some of the best oportunities for viewing unspoilt indigenous forests and proteas, restios, ericas and fynbos. The Montagu Pass is a scenic drive and national monument or drive the Seven passes Road to Knysna {via Saasveld}. Or catch a ride with the power van {rail trolly} that travels through the Outeniqua mountains. Beautiful picnic spots along the way with lookout points to take your breath away. Call the Tourism Bureau to be liked up with the various tour guides.

Glentana - To the west of George you will find the picturesque little seaside village of Glentana where time has stood still – a lovely long stretch of perfectly white beach. At low tide, you can walk from the main beach to a century old shipwrecked floating dry dock. During season lifeguards man the main beach for safe bathing.

Pacalsdorp is situated 7km from the city centre of George. Explore the fascinating and natural features of this part of George. Pacalsdorp is richly endowned with historic buildings and places.
