Potchefstroom (Stream of Potgieter) is situated on the banks of the Mooi River and was the first town to be founded north of the Vaal River. It was founded by the Voortrekker, Andries Hendrik Potgieter, in 1838 and was once the capital of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek.

The city is home to the Agricultural Centre, currently the largest single agricultural service point on one terrain in Southern Africa and is also an important point of industry.The principal chalk and crayon factory in South Africa is located here.

The Dome area in the district offers a very unique experience for the visitor. Apart from sight-seeing, this natural phenomenon formed by a meteorite caters for the adventurous.
