Klerksdorp North West Southern Region Information

The commercial town of Klerksdorp originated on the banks of the Schoonspruit River as a rural village in 1837. It was named after Barend le Clerq, an important member of the community. Gold was discovered here in 1885.

The wonderful rock engravings located on Bosworth Farm are wonderfully preserved and are now a provincial heritage site.

Gold and uranium are being mined here. It is also home to the largest grain silo in the country, second largest grain co-operative in the southern hemisphere and the Vaal Reef Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in South Africa.
