North West Southern Region Information

The southern region lies bordering the Free State in the south and Gauteng to the west. The Vaal River runs along its southern border. It is the smallest area in the Province. The economy of this region is largely based on the agricultural, mining and tourism industries.

The infinitive tapestry of green maize and yellow sunflower fields, alternated with bushveld plains, and scattered wild olive and umbrella thorn trees adds to the beauty of the area. It is primarily a crop-growing area that produces maize, sunflowers, tobacco, cotton and citrus fruits. The most economic activity takes place in this region - more than 83 percent of the profitable activity of the province takes place between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp.

One of the biggest attractions in the area is the World Heritage Site of the Vredefort Dome.Two billion years ago an asteroid the size of a mountain struck the land. The 190 km-wide crater that was formed due to the impact cradles a micro-ecosystem unique to the area.
