Ottosdal North West Central Region Information

This small settlement is named after the Otto family who owned the farm, Korannafontein, on which it was built.

It is the only place in South Africa where Pyrophylite, a kind of metamorphosed clay, is mined. Pyrophylite has a variety of uses, but it is most commonly called either "Wonderstone" or "African Stone" and is used for sculpting. Khoisan Rock Engravings can be observed on some of the local farms.

Maize, sunflower and ground-nuts are grown here and there are cattle, sheep, pigs and chicken farms in the area.
