Lichtenburg North West Central Region Information

The town Lichtenburg was established on the farms Middelbosch and Doornfontein. It was given this name so that it would be seen as a town whose light would shine over the area, not just for its hospitality and prosperity, but also in respect of religion. In 1926 a diamond was found which resulted in a diamond rush. The biggest pure red diamond in the world was found here.

The town forms the western point of South Africa's Maize Triangle, a vast corn-producing area that is known as South Africa's bread basket. It is the centre of a huge farming district where maize, groundnuts and sunflower seeds are the main crops.

The "Wondergat" is a sinkhole and is one of the deepest places in South Africa where inland diving takes place.
