Mokopane Limpopo Waterberg Information

Previously named Potgietersrus, Mokopane was established by the Voortrekkers and originally named after Piet Potgieter, a Voortrekker leader.  In 2003 it was decided to rename the town to Mokopane, after the chief that murdered Potgieter at a later stage.

The town is situated 2 hours from Gauteng, and usually serves as a stop-over for travellers en route to the Kruger National Park, Botswana or Zimbabwe. The short drive also makes it ideal as a breakaway destination over weekends or holidays.

The area produces wheat, tabacco, beef, maize, cotton, peanuts and citrus. One of the largest citrus farms in the southern hemisphere can also be found here.

The Makapansgat Caves lie 15km north of Mokopane, and is archaeologically significant for the recovery of Homo Habilis and Australopithecus Africanus. The history of the town can also be relived in the Arend Dieperink Museum which also has an aloe garden of 212 species.

The Doorndraaidam Nature Reserve offers activities such as bird watching, fishing, hiking, camping and water sports. The Percy Fyfe Nature Reserve is also around 25km from town.
