African safaris in malaria-free areas are on the menu for anyone visiting the town of Modimolle in the Waterberg region of Limpopo.  This regions consists out of six separate areas: Bela-Bela, Modimolle, Mookgophong, Mokopane, Lephalale and Thabazimbi. 

Modimolle (previously known as Nylstroom) means 'The Spirits Have Eaten'. This is to symbolise the tradition where food is offered to the forefather spirits by tribes, and the spirits then pushing the tribe's enemies over the cliffs of a hill. The new name can also be connected to the landmark of the town - a lone hill called Kranskop. African people in the area used to refer to this as Modimolle Hill.

Today the town serves as administrive headquarters of the region, and also as commercial centre. Its major exports are grapes, peaches and watermelons. It is also very centrally situated for access to the Nylsvlei Wetland and the Waterberg Biosphere, both well-known tourist attractions.

In times of the Boer War the town hosted a concentration camp here in 1901. JG Strijdom, a former Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, also lived in Modimolle for 20 years. His home has been declared a National Monument, and can still be visited today. Other famous inhabitants included the artists Erich Mayer and Pierneef.

A huge variety of options exist for the traveller wanting to get outdoors. These range from birding, horse riding, hiking, hunting, helicopter rides, rock climbing, sky diving, 4x4 and quad trails plus highly recommended golf courses.
