Howick Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands Information

Howick is located in the uMgungundlovu District of KwaZulu-Natal. Howick is approximately 88 kilometres from Durban at the Indian Ocean. It enjoys warm summers and cool dry winters. The town is located just off the N3 freeway, connecting it with the rest of South Africa.

The town is famous because of the Howick Falls, which is a large waterfall when the Umgeni River falls 95 metres over the cliffs on its way to the Indian Ocean. There are several other waterfalls in the vicinity. Near Howick are Cascade Falls and Shelter Falls while the higher Karkloof Falls is 16 km to the east.

Howick lies next to the large body of water, the Midmar Dam which has a shore line of 60 km and is a popular holiday and weekend resort. Midmar hosts the Annual Midmar Mile which is the largest open water swimming event in the world as well as a large number of provincial and National Triathlons and sailing events.
