Ladysmith Kwa-Zulu Natal Battlefields Information

Ladysmith, named after the British Governor Sir Harry Smith’s Spanish wife, is located on the banks of the Klip River, at the foot of the Drakensberg mountains and about 26 km from the Van Reenen’s pass which is a road over the Drakensberg Mountains.

It is mainly agricultural with some industries. Dunlop Tyres are made here.

Many battles were fought in Ladysmith during the Second Anglo-Boer war and many memorials were erected to commemorate the fallen and the various battles. Ladysmith is the hometown of Joseph Shabalala, founder of the popular award-winning South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
