Centurion is situated on the Highveld of Gauteng, in between Pretoria and Midrand. It boasts with the largest private hospital on the African continent (Unitas Hospital) as well as the 2nd largest shopping centre in the Tshwane Metropolitan area - the Centurion Mall. The Hennops River flows through the area.
BOER WAR HISTORY - during the 1st Boer War, the Battle for Rooihuiskraal took place in 1881 in this district. DJ Erasmus, a Boer Commander, defeated Colonel Gildea, the British Commanding Officer of the Pretoria Garrison. During the 2nd Boer War the Irene Concentration Camp was set up on the farm Doornkloof in 1901, and housed more than 5 500 inhabitants. Of these, 1 249 lost their lives here, and to this day around 576 of the original tombstones can still be seen in the well preserved Irene Camp Cemetery.
IRENE - Irene was established in 1902 when 337 plots were laid out on the farm Doornkloof. A later owner of the farm, Jan Smuts, also played a huge role in the history of South Africa. He died here in 1950, and the Smuts House is a museum that tracks this history.
LYTTLETON - Lyttleton Township was set up on the farm Droogegrond in 1904. When it incorporated the suburbs of Doornkloof and Irene, the area was granted city council status in 1962. When the area was renamed Verwoerdburg in 1967 (after Hendrik Verwoerd), Lyttleton became a suburb again alongside Clubview, Eldoraigne, Wierdapark and Zwartkop. After the Apartheid era, Ladium, Erasmia and Cladius also joined as suburbs, as well as the black township of Olievenhoutbosch. Today other suburbs include The Reeds, Rooihuiskraal and Raslouw.
In 1995, Verwoerdburg was renamed Centurion, which was chosen as it was more politically neutral.
Supersport Park in Centurion is a cricket ground that has played host to various important tournaments through the years, including the 2003 Cricket World Cup, the 2005 Women's Cricket World Cup, the 2007 ICC World 20/20 and in 2009 to both the IPL and the ICC Championships Trophy.
The Centurion Mall was established in 1983/84 around the Centurion Lake. Show more
