Randburg Gauteng Central Gauteng Information

Randburg is part of northern Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Originally four farms dating back to before the 1850's, it became a popular area in the middle of the gold rush. With steady growth, 32 suburbs were joined together on 1 July 1959 to create the combined municipal area. It was named after the Rand, the then new national currency replacing the pound sterling. This all happened just before South Africa became a republic in 1961. Formerly a separate municipality, its administration devolved to the newly created City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in the late 1990s, the same time as neighbouring Sandton and Roodepoort.

The residents tends to be more affluent than most of Johannesburg, but poverty has incrersed in recent years. The area was a prominent white area during the Apartheid era, but the population has since become much more varied. It remains predominantly white, with English and Afrikaans spoken by most citizens. It contains numerous suburbs, mostly residential.

Randburg has an abundance of shopping malls and entertainment areas, one of its most noticeable characteristics.
