Villiers Free State Northern Information

Villiers was founded in 1882 on the farms Pearson Valley and Grootdraai as owned by Lourens de Villiers in the north-eastern Free State. It lies on the banks of the Vaal River next to the N3 highway, and also on the border of the province of Mpumalanga.

The closest nearby towns include Warden (98km), Heidelberg (60km), Vereeniging (70km), Frankfort (33km) and Vrede (61km). Pretoria is around 150km from Villiers.

The town was established at the Vaal River crossing on the very important transport route between Durban and Johannesburg. Buildings and structures in the town dates back to the start of the 19th century, and some prime examples of sandstone architecture exist.
