Parys Free State Northern Information

Parys lies next to the Vaal River in the Northern part of the Free State province. Meaning "Paris", the Afrilaans name was given by a German surveyor who, during the Franco-Prussian war, participated in the Siege of Paris. When looking over the Vaal River at the area, it reminded him of Paris on the River Seine.

The Vredefort crater is the largest verified impact crater on Earth, and Parys lies within 5km of its border. This makes Parys a welcome stop for archeologists. Tourists can expect many opportunities for leisure and adventure, like water sport activities which include river rafting, water skiing, canoeing, angling and power boating.
