Vrede a is town in the Free State province of South Africa that is the agricultural hub of a 100 km² region.

The town was established here after a dispute arose regarding as to where to set up the town in 1863 and as a result named the Vrede which means peace in Afrikaans and Dutch.

Vrede is a scenic little town that was established in 1863 after a dispute arose regarding where to set up the town. Once the argument was resolved, the town was called Vrede or “peace”. Today Vrede finds itself at the architectural hub of maize wheat, mutton, wool, beef, dairy, products and poultry. A First World War Cannon may also be seen in the town. The diversity of local activities in the area includes hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, game viewing, golf, arts and crafts. Something for just about every taste.
