Harrismith Free State Eastern Region Information

Harrismith, named after Sir Harry Smith is a large village on the N3 highway in the Free State province of South Africa, between Johannesburg (about 350 km from Johannesburg) and Durban. This important crossroads in the South African land trade routes is surrounded by Mesas and Buttes and located at the base of one of these is called Platberg.

Harrismith was an important base during the South African (Anglo-Boer) war, and travelers can visit the many battle sites, block houses and a military cemetery evidence. The town is about 90 miles from Ladysmith.

Most people only know it as a convenient stop for fuel trucks and vehicles but the town is also home to the largest truck stop in the Southern Hemisphere, Highway Junction. Harrismith is the center of one of the five wool production districts in Southern Africa. And it’s Town Hall is a graceful sandstone and brick building, built in 1907, and is a National Monument. Harrismith Wildflower Gardens was founded in 1967 as a botanical garden and contain about 20% of the Drakensberg region's flora. Located around two dams fed by mountain springs, it’s a perfect picnic spot.

The 18-hole golf course was founded in 1887 and is probably the third oldest in South Africa (after the Royal Cape and George Golf Clubs) The Dirty Harry is a mountain bike race which forms part of the South African National Mountain Bike Series and it’s part of the magnificent wonderful Berg Bohaai festival which is held annually in early October.

Well preserved Bushmen-paintings can still be found about 5 kilometers out of town.
