Hankey Eastern Cape Western Coast Information

A Small Town with Lots to Offer

Hankey was established in 1826, and is the Gamtoos Valley's oldest and chief town. It was named after the Reverend Williams Allers, an ex-banker and secretary of the London Missionary Society (LMS), who was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Hankey is the gateway to the Baviaanskloof Wilderness area. Sarah Baartmans grave overlooks the beautiful town. She was a Khoisan woman who went to Europe to exhibit her unnatural body, but died a lonely death in France in 1815. She was finally laid to rest on the 9th of August 2002 in Hankey. The Second Irrigation scheme was built in 1943 by Williams Phillip, son of John Phillip, the first missionary in the region. Phillips grave as well as the Hetchees familyï's graves are also found here. Accommodation is available in various establishments. Contact the Information Bureau for more information.
